Joseph Francis Oliveira, Jr.
Fairhaven – Joseph Francis Oliveira, Jr., 78, of Fairhaven, died in So. Carolina following a brief illness. He was the widower of Catherine P. White and the son of the late Dartmouth Constable Joseph F. Oliveira, Sr. and Angelina (Perry) Oliveira.
Born in New Bedford, he grew up in Dartmouth and resided in Fairhaven.
Mr. Oliveira was a veteran of the United States Army who retired as a captain in the Corps of Engineers after more than 30 years of honorable service in his country. His decorations include an expert rifleman, graduated from SERE and OCS, as well as numerous distinctions, letters and medals of achievement as an officer. He was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company and the Military Historical Society.
A self-employed businessman since the late 1970s, he founded Nu-Traffic Concepts and Joe’s Transportation and served as President of Blue Star Services and Acushnet Recycling, among other business ventures. When his wife passed away in 2014, Mr. Oliveira left his corporate functions and returned to classes at BCC After a 46-year hiatus, he completed the required courses to graduate from university and graduated in 2016 .
Mr. Oliveira served on the Town of Fairhaven Finance Committee and was a former member of the Prince Henry Society. He enjoyed camping, traveling, competitive shooting, skiing, driving, racquetball, running and working with his hands. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his children and grandchildren unconditionally.
His family includes his five sons, Michael B. Oliveira and his ex-wife, Kateina of So.Carolina, Matthew J. Oliveira of Fairhaven, Jacob F. Oliveira and his partner, Amanda Hall of Fall River, Adam F. Oliveira and his wife, Jeanny of Texas and Alexander J. Oliveira and his fiancee, Amanda Aguiar of Somerset; 2 sisters, Linda Marshall and her husband, Kenneth of Florida and Carolyn Gifford of Dartmouth; her sister-in-law, Gerri Alongi of Florida; her nieces, Lynn-Marie Gifford, Carolyn Arruda, Amanda Arruda and Anne Arruda and her nephews, Christopher Marshall and Ricky Gifford; and 9 grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late George Oliveira.
Visiting hours Monday, May 10, 2021 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. His funeral and burial are private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, 41 Mall Rd., Burlington, MA 01805 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
